Friday 12ROCK PAINO & FO' Sho' Fridays
|
EVERY FRIDAY
HAPPY HOUR: 6-9
DJ LEBOWITZ LIVE
HE AINT A DJ, He's just the world's ROCKINEST Piano Player
Fo Sho! Fridays
Hosted by DJs MAKossa (Funky Rewind, AFREAKA!) and Kung Fu Chris (Raw Deluxe) plus special guest:
Romanowski (Future Primitive Sound/Trouser Trout Records)
Funk, soul, boogie, disco, hip-hop, reggae and more.
"Breaks so hard you might not ever come out your b-boy stance!"
Every second Friday of the month
San Francisco DJ Romanowski considers sneaking into his mother's
liquor cabinet and record collection his introduction to the DJ
lifestyle. Booze and Beatles albums gave way to old school rap and
early electronica, a combination he spun together at the age of 14 in
his native Zurich, Switzerland. He moved to San Francisco in 1992 and
soon hooked up with the Behind the Post Office collective, a group of
DJs and rappers revolving around the Behind the Post Office record
store. Sharing the stage with Meat Beat Manifesto and Thievery
Corporation, along with DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, at the legendary
first Brainfreeze performance was a highlight of Romanowski's early
career. His debut, Steady Rocking on Future Primitive Sound, displayed
the DJ's love of Jamaica's rocksteady music filtered through playful
electronics. Besides his musical output, Romanowski is an artist
associated with the Curators collective and has had his work shown in
Hong Kong, Tokyo, Los Angeles, and Seattle's edgier galleries.

Saturday 20AFROBEAT NA GO DIE
|
Maisha Productions & Madrone present:
Afrobeat Na Go Die
The music originated by Fela Anikulapo Kuti lives forever. Created by Fela in the late ‘60s as a mix of traditional Yoruban folk music with European and American influences, among them jazz and funk, Afrobeat is dance music with a powerful message of social, cultural, and spiritual liberation. The genre also encompasses variations on the Afrobeat theme, from the tribal funk of West Africa to the jazzy melodies of the Ethiopiques series.
Today, over a decade after its founder’s death, Afrobeat is more popular than ever. There’s now a Broadway musical honoring Fela’s life, and all over the world, Afrobeat bands like Antibalas, Albino, and Aphrodesia are making new incursions into the realm of deeply rhythmic, horn-enhanced grooves, funky baselines, and searing guitar licks, adding greatly to the canon of works developed since Fela’s time.
Join San Francisco ’s resident Afrobeat expert, Liberian-born DJ Jeremiah, as he presents a new monthly party at Madrone solely dedicated to playing Afrobeat both new and old – and nothing but Afrobeat. Titled “Afrobeat Na Go Die,” the night promises to be heavier, funkier, and more vibrant than anything San Francisco has ever seen before. Alongside Jeremiah will be respected world beat DJ Santero, who’s also a huge Afrobeat fan and record collector. When these two Afrobeat disciples dig into their deep crates, juju happens.

Wednesday 24LIVE MUSIC SHOWCASE: Garrin Benfield & one f
|
Guitar Rythms with Garrin Benfield & An Acoustic Set with one f
NO COVER 9PM
Garrin Benfield's shows center on his quirky pop melodies but are stretched by Garrin into improvisational explorations into new territory each night. Familiar songs are often twisted and contorted into gorgeous new creations that leave audiences breathless. At once organic and eclectic, Garrin's shows are an experience as much as they are a musical concert! Utilizing electronic effects and a loop station, audiences find themselves grooving to atmospheric rhythms and settling back into Benfield's soothing vocal style. When the whole band is cooking, Benfield seamlessly blends his compositional skills with his improvisational ones, making old songs seem new. His thought-provoking lyrics and orchestral arrangements are constantly refurbished but are never over-shadowed by the endless noodeling characterized by many in the neighboring jam-Band genre.
one f, . . . what? they're playing an acoustic set? at Madrone? Call the papers!
You need this music for just a few reasons: because this music will start your car. It will take your dog for a walk. Calm your kids. Play with your kids. Feed the Hungry, or at least make them feel fed. It will have a good time for you. Do your chores. It will find your phone, . . . it is your phone. Don't stop until you too have seen one f.
